Arctic and polar regions store enormous amounts of ice. It's not all at the surface. It's hidden below too. However, scientists are starting to discover that ice below the surface is melting too.

Lewis Pugh, UN Patron of the Oceans, did a swim under the Antarctica ice sheet in 2020. It was a swim in a supra-glacial lake, formed by melting waters. There are now over 6,000 supra-glacial lakes like this in Antarctica alone, signalling rapid change.

Lewis said it was the most beautiful place he has ever seen in the world in his whole life. Even when melting, polar regions are stunning.
